What You May Be Experiencing

People come to individual therapy for many different reasons. You may know exactly what you want support with, or you may simply feel that something is not working anymore.

You may notice:

  • Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally drained

  • Difficulty managing stress, triggers, or intense emotions

  • Feeling stuck in patterns that are hard to change

  • Struggling with grief, loss, or a major life transition

  • Using substances or behaviours to cope with emotional pain

  • Difficulty setting boundaries or expressing your needs

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or others

  • Repeating painful relationship patterns

  • Carrying shame, self-doubt, guilt, or inner criticism

  • Feeling impacted by past experiences or trauma

  • Having difficulty trusting yourself or making decisions

  • Feeling pressure from family, culture, relationships, or expectations

Individual therapy can help you make sense of these experiences with compassion, curiosity, and practical support.

How Individual Therapy Can Help

Therapy can provide a space to slow down, understand what you are feeling, and explore what you need. It can help you develop insight, build coping skills, process painful experiences, and strengthen your relationship with yourself

Individual therapy can support you in:

  • Understanding emotional patterns and triggers

  • Building tools for anxiety, stress, and emotional regulation

  • Processing trauma, grief, or painful past experiences

  • Reducing shame, self-blame, and self-criticism

  • Strengthening boundaries and communication

  • Exploring identity, values, and personal needs

  • Improving self-awareness and self-compassion

  • Understanding relationship patterns and attachment wounds

  • Developing healthier coping strategies

  • Building confidence, resilience, and self-trust

  • Creating meaningful change at a pace that feels manageable

Therapy is not about being told what to do. It is a collaborative process where we work together to understand your experiences and support change in a way that feels respectful and realistic.

Our Approach to Individual Therapy

At Nova Therapy, individual therapy is warm, collaborative, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive. I recognize that each person’s story is shaped by their relationships, culture, identity, family system, nervous system, and lived experiences.

Depending on your needs, therapy may include:

  • Person-Centred Therapy (PCT) offers a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can explore your emotions, experiences, and goals at your own pace.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) can support clients in processing trauma, distressing memories, emotional triggers, and negative beliefs that continue to impact daily life.

  • Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) may be helpful when distress is connected to shock, trauma, attachment injury, or nervous system responses that feel difficult to shift.

  • Ego State Therapy can help you understand different parts of yourself, including protective, wounded, fearful, critical, or overwhelmed parts, and build more internal compassion and cooperation.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help you relate differently to difficult thoughts and emotions while reconnecting with your values and taking meaningful steps forward.

  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) can support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, boundaries, and communication. â€‹â€‹

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can help you understand how thoughts, emotions, and behaviours interact. It may support clients struggling with anxiety, self-doubt, overthinking, or unhelpful patterns.

Therapy is tailored to your needs, goals, and comfort level. We work at a pace that honours your readiness, capacity, and lived experience.

Who Individual Therapy is For

How Therapy Can Help?

Individual therapy may be helpful if you are navigating:

  • Anxiety or overthinking

  • Trauma or painful past experiences

  • Grief and loss

  • Addiction or coping patterns that feel hard to change

  • Life transitions or identity changes

  • Relationship concerns

  • Family or cultural expectations

  • Emotional overwhelm

  • Stress and burnout

  • Self-esteem or self-worth concerns

  • Boundaries and communication difficulties

  • Feeling stuck, disconnected, or uncertain about next steps

You do not need to be in crisis to begin therapy. Many clients start therapy because they want to better understand themselves, strengthen coping skills, or feel more supported through a difficult season of life.

What Clients Can Expect

In the first few sessions, we will explore what brings you to therapy, what you have been experiencing, and what goals or changes you are hoping for. You do not need to have everything figured out before starting.

In individual therapy, you can expect to:

  • Share your story in a supportive, non-judgmental space

  • Identify patterns, triggers, and emotional responses

  • Build coping strategies that fit your needs

  • Explore how past experiences may be affecting the present

  • Strengthen self-awareness and self-compassion

  • Work toward boundaries, clarity, and emotional regulation

  • Process trauma, grief, or distressing experiences when appropriate

  • Move at a pace that feels safe and manageable

The goal is to help you feel more grounded, supported, and connected to yourself as you work toward meaningful change.
