When Worry Starts Taking Up Too Much Space

Illustration representing worry, overthinking, and the repetitive thought patterns that can accompany anxiety

Everyone worries sometimes. But when your mind rarely seems to switch off, even everyday decisions can start to feel like a lot, or you may spend more time than you would like thinking about what might go wrong, it can become exhausting.

Anxiety can look different from person to person. You might overthink conversations, prepare for every possible outcome, avoid situations that make you uncomfortable, or find it difficult to relax even when nothing is obviously wrong.

You do not need to know why you feel anxious or have a diagnosis before reaching out. We can start with what has been happening for you lately.

Overthinking

Replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, or thinking through the same situation again and again.

Avoiding What Feels Uncomfortable

Putting off conversations, situations, decisions, or experiences because the anxiety around them feels like too much.

Anxiety Can Show Up in More Ways Than Worry

Anxiety is not always obvious. Sometimes it feels like racing thoughts or expecting something to go wrong. Other times, it can show up as irritability, tension, difficulty making decisions, avoiding things, or needing a lot of reassurance before you feel settled.

You may also look calm on the outside while spending a lot of energy thinking ahead, checking things over, or trying to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Always Preparing

Thinking several steps ahead, planning for what might go wrong, or finding uncertainty particularly uncomfortable.

Needing Reassurance

Looking for reassurance that things are okay, that you made the right decision, or that nothing has gone wrong

Your Mind May Be Trying to Keep You Prepared

Worry can sometimes be your mind’s way of trying to keep you prepared. Thinking ahead, noticing risks, or imagining what might happen can feel like a way of making sure you are not caught off guard

The difficulty is when your mind keeps doing this even when you would rather rest, make a decision, enjoy something, or simply move on from a thought.

Rather than treating anxiety as something you should be able to switch off, therapy can help us understand what tends to pull you back into worry and find different ways of responding when it happens.

When Worry Starts Making Decisions for You

Sometimes anxiety does more than make you feel worried. It can begin shaping what you do, what you avoid, how much reassurance you look for, or whether you feel able to move forward when you cannot know exactly how something will turn out.

You might turn down opportunities, avoid difficult conversations, put decisions off, or spend a lot of time trying to make sure you are choosing the “right” option.

Therapy can give us room to understand these patterns without judging them and look at what might help you respond differently when worry shows up.

You Do Not Have to Get Rid of Every Anxious Thought

Trying to make every worried thought disappear can sometimes become exhausting in itself. Therapy does not have to be about never feeling anxious again.

We can look at what tends to pull you into worry, what you do when anxiety shows up, and what helps you stay connected to what matters to you even when there is some uncertainty.

Depending on what you need, we may also work on practical ways to handle overwhelming moments, make decisions with less second-guessing, or become more comfortable letting some questions to remain unanswered.
